Rafael Devers Stands Firm Against Position Change

Red Sox designated hitter Rafael Devers has made it clear he has no interest in switching to first base, rejecting a request from chief baseball officer Craig Breslow in light of Triston Casas’ injury. Devers, who transitioned from third base to DH over the winter, expressed frustration that the team is now reconsidering that move, feeling they have gone back on their word. He emphasized that while he considers himself a versatile ballplayer, he was told to put away his glove and focus solely on hitting. The abrupt request to take on first base has left him upset, and he firmly believes the front office should seek an external replacement rather than shifting him into the role.

Despite his disagreement with the decision, Devers maintains strong relationships with his teammates and remains focused on his offensive contributions. However, he admitted to uncertainty about some of Breslow’s decisions, questioning the logic behind asking him to play a new position so late in the process. While there’s always a possibility that circumstances could change, Devers has stated he won’t reconsider and doesn’t intend to be flexible on the matter. For now, the Red Sox must weigh their options in addressing the first base vacancy without disrupting their slugger’s focus.
