Orioles Agree to Deal with Cuban Pitcher Naykel Cruz
The Orioles have reached an agreement to sign Cuban left-hander Naykel Cruz, pending a physical. According to BeisbolFR.com’s Francys Romero, Cruz is expected to join either High-A or Double-A once the deal is finalized. The 25-year-old showcased his skills for major league teams last November after spending four seasons in the Cuban National Series, Cuba’s top professional league.
Cruz was also part of Team Cuba in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, though his time on the mound was limited to two-thirds of an inning. His professional experience includes a brief stint in the Mexican League in 2022, where he pitched in seven games. During his time in Cuba, he posted a 4.18 ERA with a 19.1% strikeout rate and 15.4% walk rate. However, recent reports indicate Cruz has increased his velocity from an average of 91-92 mph to 94-95 mph, potentially boosting his future prospects with Baltimore.
