Blue Jays Add Veteran Right-Hander José Ureña

The Blue Jays have signed right-hander José Ureña to a major league deal, adding an experienced arm to their pitching staff. Ureña, 33, initially joined the Mets on a minor league contract in February, earning a brief promotion after three starts at Triple-A Syracuse. However, he struggled in his lone big-league appearance, allowing five runs in three innings before being designated for assignment. Toronto acted quickly, securing Ureña just two days after he elected free agency.

Entering his 11th MLB season, Ureña has carved out a role as a dependable swingman, amassing more than 150 starts and 75 relief appearances since his debut in 2015. His career 4.80 ERA underscores his ability to provide innings, a valuable trait for a Blue Jays team seeking stability on the mound. Unlike fellow recent signee Spencer Turnbull—who hasn’t pitched since last September—Ureña is expected to contribute immediately, giving Toronto another option to bolster its pitching depth.
