MLB Eyes Mexico City Return with Potential Diamondbacks-Padres Series
Major League Baseball is exploring the possibility of bringing a regular season series to Mexico City in 2026, with the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres reportedly in discussions with the league. This potential series aligns with the "World Tour" initiative outlined in the 2022 collective bargaining agreement, which aims to expand international play. While the CBA initially envisioned a Mexico City event in May 2026, along with potential series in London and San Juan, MLB has yet to finalize these plans. Notably, scheduled 2025 games in Mexico City, Paris, and San Juan were scrapped due to economic considerations.
The potential 2026 series would mark MLB's return to Mexico City after previous successful ventures. The Padres and Giants played a two-game series in 2023, followed by the Rockies and Astros in 2024. This renewed interest follows the cancellation of a planned 2020 series between the Diamondbacks and Padres due to the pandemic. While no regular season games are slated for Mexico in 2025, the Red Sox did participate in Spring Training games in Monterrey. The 2025 international slate is limited to the Tokyo Series between the Dodgers and Cubs.
