Dodgers Acquire Speedster Esteury Ruiz from Athletics

The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded for outfielder Esteury Ruiz from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-hander Carlos Duran. Ruiz, recently designated for assignment by the A's, will be optioned to Triple-A. The move comes after the Dodgers placed right-hander Kyle Hurt on the 60-day injured list to clear a 40-man roster spot. Ruiz, known for his exceptional speed, led the American League with 67 stolen bases in 2023. However, his offensive production and defensive consistency have been questioned, leading to his demotion and subsequent trade.  

Ruiz's tenure with the Athletics was marked by inconsistency and injury. Despite his base-stealing prowess, his batting line and defensive metrics were underwhelming. The A's ultimately opted to move on, trading him to the Dodgers, who will aim to harness his speed in their system. The Dodgers, in acquiring Ruiz, are taking a low risk chance on a player with a very high ceiling when it comes to base running. The A's, in moving Ruiz, are clearing roster space, and adding a player who may be able to help their pitching staff.
