Mike O'Berry: A Journeyman Catcher and Coach

Preston Michael O'Berry, born on April 20, 1954, in Birmingham, Alabama, is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) catcher who played from 1979 to 1985. Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 22nd round of the 1975 MLB Draft, O'Berry made his MLB debut on April 8, 1979. Over his career, he played for six teams: the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, California Angels, New York Yankees, and Montreal Expos.

A fun fact about O'Berry is his role as a minor league manager after retiring from MLB. In 1992, he led the Bluefield Orioles to their first Appalachian League championship title. Later, he coached high school baseball, guiding Pelham High School to its first state title in 2004, earning national recognition for his leadership.

In his MLB career, O'Berry appeared in 258 games, recording a .191 batting average, 72 hits, 27 RBIs, and three home runs. Known for his defensive skills behind the plate, he contributed to his teams as a reliable backup catcher.
