Kevin Maas: A Record-Breaking Rookie with Power at the Plate
Kevin Christian Maas, born on January 20, 1965, in Castro Valley, California, is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) player known for his impressive power-hitting debut. Maas played as a first baseman and designated hitter, primarily for the New York Yankees, and briefly for the Minnesota Twins. He also had a stint in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) with the Hanshin Tigers.
A defining moment in Maas's career came during his rookie season in 1990 when he set a record for the fewest at-bats (72) to hit 10 home runs, showcasing his incredible power. He finished the season with 21 home runs in just 79 games, earning him second place in The Sporting News Rookie of the Year voting. Despite his strong start, Maas struggled to maintain consistency in subsequent seasons.
Over his MLB career, Maas appeared in 406 games, recording a .230 batting average, 65 home runs, and 169 RBIs. In NPB, he added 8 home runs and 42 RBIs to his career totals. While his career was relatively short, Maas's rookie season remains a highlight in Yankees history.
